Nikolas was born with profound hearing loss in his right ear, and mild loss in his left. After years of testing, and training with firearms, his hearing loss worsened. Eventually Nikolas was able to gain a magitek hearing aid for his one, semi-functioning ear. The other sports a ‘stud’ that is actually a microphone for picking up bilateral noise. Nikolas can read lips, speak, and can use hand signs in both Common and Garlean.

He was well known for his figure skating skills prior to his draft, but beyond that he was most known for being exceedingly sheltered. Niko's mother, Katarina, was a very protective and paranoid Medicus from a well known noble family. If you're Garlean, and knew Niko previously, you may know him as Nikolas jen Valens, the sole son of Ivan van Valens, who fell in the invasion of Ala Mhigo.
